Review of
Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void
If someone were to start Legends for the first time and decided to read in chronological order, this would be the first Star Wars novel they would ever read. And, objectively, it is weak. Now, that is completely Into the Void's fault. From what I've read, this was supposed to be the first book in a trilogy, but it never happened because Disney bought the franchise soon after.
In this book, we follow Lanoree Brock and her unlikely companion Tre Sana as they attempt to thwart the plans of the Stargazer cult, a group set on finding away to leave the Tython system. While there were many parts of the book that I did enjoy (Force alchemy makes an appearance in this book, and it is awesome), the overall story is weak. There was not much attachment to the main character or the main villain.
From a writing perspective, Tim Lebon is solid. There are parts where he writes flashback in the presence tense which I really can't stand. But that's just a personal gripe.
Into the Void is an "okay" book that could have been something great, but was cut short due to the Disney acquisition. If you read it, you may find something to enjoy, but if you're not into the ancient past of Star Wars, I'd recommend that you pass on it.
