Review of
Dawn of the Jedi: Force Storm #1
This comic issue had a lot to live up to upon its release. It would be our first TRUE glimpse into the beginnings of the Jedi. I thought that in terms of a visual aesthetic, it conveyed that feeling of "ancientness," but I do have a few gripes. Why does everyone have blasters that look like exactly like the ones in the other eras? Why do the ships look a lot like the ships in later eras as well? Don't get me wrong, this is a minor complaint. I just feel like they could have really gone with the "ancient" look and ran with it as much as they could have.
The story itself really catches your attention though, in my opinion. Ancient Jedi called "Je'daii"; an empire of evil force-sensitive aliens that spans the galaxy and rules it with an iron fist; the Tython system, a system secluded from the rest of the galaxy due to it being close to the galaxy's core. Make no mistake, there is a lot of new and interesting material here in Force Storm #1. But I fear that in the artist's attempt to make it still feel familiar to Star Wars, to make it "Star Wars-y," he missed out on the chance to really show us an ancient and mysterious time in the history of the Jedi Order.
