I have never been a fan of Greg Bear's writing style. His descriptions are often too detailed and cause my mind to wander out of boredom.

That said, there isn't a lot else to like in this book.

The whole idea of Sekot was hard to believe and even harder to understand (I'm sure this was partly due to the writing style and my brain not liking it.)

The characters we already know act quite different than they have in the past. Obi-Wan acts like a worried old man for most of the book. Anakin is so fueled by hate already. I could understand him having some darkness inside, but this seemed too much to believe.

Then there are new characters added that don't really live much beyond this story. Thracia walks in and interrupts a meeting of the Jedi High Council. She has never existed in the universe before this book, so it is hard to understand why she would have so much power.

Charza is another character thrown in out of the blue. He is supposedly someone that has worked with the Jedi a lot in the past, but he is mentioned in no other books except this one.

It was somewhat interesting seeing the interactions between Tarkin and Sienar, but their storyline didn't make a whole lot of sense. Whey would an engineer/builder be given command of a fleet?
